We're almost there! No, not the NFL Draft, stupid, no one cares about the bust the Vikings are going to eventually pick. I'm talking about the unveiling of the new Minnesota Vikings uniforms! And by almost there, I mean that this damn horse and pony show of revealing bits and pieces of the new uniform over the past month is coming to an end. THANK GOD.
This week the Vikings released the final clues to the puzzle, like the likely shoulder stripe you see above. STRIPES! I love stripes. We'll explore some further previews below, and pass along some of the great mock ups we've seen with all of the previous clues considered. SO MUCH UNIFORM STUFF.
Aside from the totally boss shoulder stripes above, we also got a sneak peak at the jersey's new uniform numbers, as you can see here. They look whiter than your wife's wedding dress, that's for damn sure, but there's also no blocky, beveled edges or anything weird like that. The curve around the edge of the "2" is actually pretty neat, and the rest of the angles actually look very throwback, which of course is totally BOSS. It reminds me of a 70s era jersey, which is like all I could ever want.
The other item is this video of Adrian Peterson talking about the new uniforms. I don't know. Watch it if you like. They're not pictures so I get bored pretty easily.
Then there's this quote form Nike Global Creative Director for the NFL which means absolutely nothing, but was deemed to be a worthwhile uniform preview, instead of just showing us the god damn helmet already. SWEET.
Finally, below are two mock ups that several fans have done (and passed along to the excellent Eric Thompson on Twitter, who followed these updates like a raven delivering a message). Both look pretty awesome, and have me kind of excited for the final product. Excited enough to buy a jersey?! Haha, don't be stupid. I'm not wasting my money on laundry. But excited enough to be damn proud of my team because we're wearing the football uniform equivalent of Justin Timberlake in the Suit and Tie video.
So, if this is close to the final product, what do we think?

@BobbyEmmer I know!! They are gonna be so tight!
Hate these new hi-tech jerseys.... they look like a 16yr old girls t-shirt. Gimme a good, old-fashioned frickin FOOTBALL JERSEY, with big baggy sleeves, and heavy mesh fabric you can hook yer fingers in.
I am very curious to see how the numbers look - specifically if there will be so many curves. The 8 looks weird with triangular cutouts at the waist but round corners on the top and bottom.
Also, I'm not a big fan of the font on the gold "Vikings" on the front of the jersey. I wish the word weren't there at all, but if it must be, it should be that army-stencil font they used to use, or something similar. The horns on the V make the whole word look like stupid gangster calligraphy grafiti nonsense. Although, really, the rest of the word would look OK if the V were just NORMAL.
Good catch. That same model had been used for other mocks, which now look incorrect, so I hadn't double checked it. But this looks pretty solid too.
I'd throw these up too, they came from the Daily Norseman comment feeds: http://i.imgur.com/HaxXmH8.jpg and http://i.imgur.com/ErBqtGE.jpg. Personally i think the home uni is spot on, but I REALLY hope they put through purple pants for the away uni, because otherwise it's incredibly boring and not identifiable.
@ShawnMcDonald1 Sleeves definitely need to be implemented more than they are. Usually now only QBs have actual sleeves, which is dumb. The stripes always look better on real sleeves, unless they go the old Vikings away style or the LSU style and do sleeves over the shoulders. That's pretty cool too.
Oh and PS, I was hoping that the stripe would be more of a reverse of the old "away" jerseys...Still, as long as they get rid of that stupid yellow pinstriping and those annoying yellow collars, I give it a thumbs up.
@eric_j_thompson You were doing God's (Purple Jesus') work!
@CollegeWolf YOU HAD ONE JOB.
And surprisingly, they did it correctly!
@BrandanFiedler Must be out. And I'm OK with that. I think the solid numbers makes it look old and dirtier, like Mary Magdalene sewed them on herself.
@peterandkelsey I don't know why, but I've never had an issue with the "Vikings" lettering. It's a real traditional logo. I think their super old logo was pretty similar, one of the first ones, so I like the tradition.
Check it here. The original logo from the 60's is almost exactly the same. I like that tradition, I guess. Just these days, it has somehow been made to look a bit more bubbly or cartoony a bit. I don't know how, that's just what I see.
@CharlesStocks Agreed. Pretty classic and clean look.
@PJD I remember when I first discovered that the current font was also traditional - it was quite surprising. I grew up on the stencil font, so when it changed to what it is now, I assumed (incorrectly) that it was their intent to make something new and modern.Once I saw some old footage with the current font painted in the end zone (if I recall correctly), I was less upset about the current font. I still prefer the stencil, though. I have a Vikings coffee mug that is new enough I'm confident it came after 2003, but it still has the stencil on it. It's interesting that they still seem to use both fonts for merchandise even though only one can be official at any one time. Thanks for the link - I looked through the site and found it to be quite interesting!
@peterandkelsey Yeah, that site is pretty amazing. The first Norseman logo? Must have been drawn by the same drunk dude that designed St. Paul's streets.
