Oh Hellz Yeah: Greg Jennings Signs With Vikings

Greg Jennings signs with Vikings

WHAT? Late Friday night, much later than I am willing to work on a blog which no one reads anyway, the Minnesota Vikings signed Greg Jennings, former Green Bay Packer receiver and new number one passing option for the guys in purple. It was a fantastic evening, largely because if you searched "Greg Jennings sucks" on Twitter that night (and into the next 24 hours, really), you were treated to an amazing collection of the worst of Packer fans. People using racial slurs, homophobic language, outrageously obscene words, and so, so ... sososososo much more. It was awesome. Please never change, Fat Packers.

Greg Jennings Vikings

WHO? Oh yeah, so, Greg Jennings signed. His contract is for 5-years, $47.5 Million, which equals out to about $9 Million-ish per season. So essentially, Rick Spielman turned Percy Harvin into Greg Jennings, a 1st round and 7th round pick in 2013, a 3rd round pick in 2014, and about $3 Million more dollars in cap space in the coming years. I don't know if he's actually good at his job (he did release Winfield ...) or an idiot savant, but I am humble enough to admit that this ended up being a pretty good deal. I mean, a deal they had to make, but still a good deal. There was no way they were going into the season with their receiving veteran being Jerome Simpson. I think we all knew the Vikings were going to sign a receiver, we just didn't know which one for sure. The fact that it ended up being Greg Jennings at a reasonable price makes it even better.

SO? Well, Ponder is running out of excuses if he isn't able to take the next steps, here. Jennings has already proven his worth when with a quality quarterback, so now that he's paired with a "potential" quarterback and an MVP at running back, I'd expect more or less the same. If Jennings ends up being a bust, I'd be much more willing to put the blame on Ponder than Jennings, eventually. The other boner bonus here is that it screws with the Packers, pretty hard. They have James Jones and Randall Cobb now. Oh, and Jordy Nelson, but white receivers never really count. Are they better than they were during the season right now? I don't think so. We'll see what magic rabbit they pull out of Aaron Rodgers butt later on this off-season, but right now the Vikings and the Packers are a lot more evenly matched than people may think.

CONCLUSION! I love it! Screwing the Pack, getting return on cap space, signing Jennings to a reasonable contract (seriously, this is going to look like dirt cheap money in four years), all ends up being pretty awesome. It also takes some pressure off of the team to immediately draft a receiver, which is nice. Last time we had that pressure we ended up with Troy Williamson, and I think we'd all like to avoid that again, yes?

However, after watching Jennings' welcoming message video to Vikings fans, I'm a little more uncomfortable about all of this. "Now we're kissing and hugging?" Oh, are we Greg? I haven't got my smooch yet, you tease.

So Greg Talked to Mighty Bret Farve and took his advice Lets look at his record on his football Life after Greenbay.(First he got mad at the Packers and took his Ball and went (jets) Home TO TEACH GB A LESSON.NOT then he got traded to Minn. where he wanted to go in first place to Put IT TO THE PACKERs again NOT . Now he talking to Jennings to come over to Vikes and put it to PACK. So far he is 0-4  for putting it to the Pack. Good Luck Gregg and Bret

Thank goodness that Mr. Jennings can get away from that horrible, horrible situation. Ponder has a smoking hot wife, I can’t imagine he will try to get Greg back to his “man cave” to share some “thick sausage pizza” the way Aaron Rodgers did. I wonder if a few tears fell from Jennings eyes as he finally realized he was free of Mr. Rod-gagers constant sexual harassment.

This makes me feel a little bit better about the Harvin trade. Ponder hasn't shown he can throw the deep ball. Sure, he can 'rainbow' one out there when he has no pressure, but any corner worth his salt can pick those off. Musgrave better use him properly or it's all just a shit sandwich anyways. For me this is Ponders make or break year. I'm not asking for elite stats (I would take them though). Just better than average, second tier stuff.

@ndmover Totally agree. This is it for Ponder. If his norm is more games like Week 17 against the Packers, cool, let's keep him around. If they're more like they were against the Bucs throughout all next year? See ya, bro. We'll always have your shirtless pictures, at least.

I'm just pissed we haven't gotten Danario Alexander yet. If we could sign him and then draft Hunter, Patterson, or Keenan Allen in the 1st then I'd be thrilled with our WRs for this year.

@frownifdown I'd guess there'd be another FA receiver pick up this offseason, but it's going to be a 2nd or probably 3rd tier guy. I just don't think they have the cap space, at all. If they can't re-sign Winfield, there's no way they get someone like a Danario Alexander.

Oh, also remember Greg Childs and his robot knees are coming back. Can't go wrong there!

Well we had to do SOMETHING. So thank god for that at least. Would have rather traded for Larry Fitz, but the extra draft picks are nice too. Can't say I'm totally sold on Jennings; and I'm especially not sold on the Ponder deep ball to Jennings (dude can't throw), but I guess we'll see what happens. Worst case, maybe Matt Cassell's wife can play QB for us...

@CollegeWolf I saw another Vikings-blog Twitter account which should remain nameless talking about how people clearly haven't watched Ponder play if they continue to argue he can't throw a deep ball.

I just wanted to be like, "No that's the problem. I've watched him play too much, and KNOW he can't throw a deep ball, duh." But people are stupid and the last thing I want on a Monday is a Twitter, fight you know?

@PJD  @CollegeWolf  I looked up greg jennings highlights on youtube friday.. naturally... i think it was about an 8 minute video.. and there were only about 3 "deep" balls thrown to him.  Everything else I saw I was pretty sure Ponder could throw.  It looks like Jennings' game is all 5-15 yard passes.

That highlight video also made Rodgers kind of look like crap.  He would just throw balls to defenders and somehow Jennings would catch it

@jakewp11  @CollegeWolf Excellent. I can't wait for Rodgers to begin looking like crap now without him.

Also, anticipating filling a day this week with Greg Jennings highlight videos, so pass along your favorites.

Did you realize you sort of called this in your game 16 recap??

"OK, so not playing Jarius Wright all season was maybe a bad idea. But what now about Percy Harvin? Do we give him the contract? Franchise him and trade him? Is he worth more trouble than anything? WHAT A CONUNDRUM! If it were me, I still give him the money. Or maybe let him walk and sign Greg Jennings in the offseason?"
