Jury Still Out on Ponder
So, despite the Vikings losing to the Detroit Lions 24-34 in spectacular fashion on Sunday, I think the jury is still out on Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder. I've come to this conclusion after one regular season game. That conclusion is basically that he needs more time to show his talents, to have all of the stars line up, and to show the Vikings fans he has that one great game in him. Hey, I've been harping on Ponder more than anyone in the Vikings blogosphere, but I realized after Sunday I need to take a step back. I mean, look at all these unfair road blocks set in Ponders way that have prevented him from really coming into his own:
- He had to play on the road. That's not ideal.
- Peterson refused to run for over 200 yards in this game. How is Ponder suppose to hit his receivers if the defense doesn't put all 11 guys in the box?
- The new uniforms probably constrict in different ways, and Ponder still isn't use to that. It's not fair to expect him to be a good quarterback in weird uniforms. And the purple pants?! Come on!
- He slept in a hotel room last night that had the air conditioning on too high, and it left him with a real sore throat Sunday morning.
It's pretty obvious. As much as we'd all like to say "We've seen enough of you Ponder. You've started 27 games, three years, and you look just as awful as you always have. You refuse to get better and are incapable of making quarterback reads, basic passes, or accurate deep balls. Please retire", that's really not fair. We just still haven't SEEN Ponder's potential yet because he hasn't been put in the right situations. So, it's just not fair. Personally, I think the jury is still out on Ponder, and we should all just cheer him on because he's a Vikings player and we should all cheer on any and all Vikings players because they are Vikings players.
Mushroom Stamp of Disapproval
Jesus, just kidding. Ponder is the absolute worst, and if there is anyone out there still supporting his potential to become a franchise quarterback for the Vikings, they need to get their head checked. They've likely had more concussions than Junior Seau. Ponder has shown zero improvement since the first game he played in. Honestly. He still stares down his receivers, still runs out of the pocket after his first option is covered, still can't throw an accurate deep ball ... I mean, what the hell are we waiting for? What do the coaches think is still going to show up? The guy is just a terrible, terrible, NFL quarterback. I'm sorry. He's probably a real cool guy, but my god, please don't play on my football team, I beg you. You're killing me, you're killing Adrian Peterson's career, and Greg Jennings is having a heart attack thinking about what he's just committed himself to for the next five years. I feel the same thing, Greg. Bro-feels.
The Shit List
But let's be honest, Ponder isn't the only issue. He's bad, but he could potentially be mediocre if the offensive line decided they didn't want to end his career themselves. They have looked like poop all preseason, and it continued to the first game. I'm afraid Kalil got feeling too cool and has slacked. Hopefully he got a reality slap this game. Charlie Johnson is still on the team, so think about that. The defense has some serious problems too. People still think Kevin Williams is overrated and over his prime? Can't make an impact anymore? Overpaid? We don't need him? Well, I present to you the game versus the Lions and how those garden gnomes somehow managed to penetrate us right up the middle, all the way up to our throats. It was disgusting. And I'd like to call out Bill Musgrave and his years and years of horrendous play calling, but what is he supposed to do? Ask Ponder to turn shit into diamonds? Ask Ponder to turn himself into a diamond? It's impossible. But still, what the hell Musgrave. Figure it out. Steal Navy's playbook or something. All they do is run, too. They at least beat Indiana this weekend.
Nipples and Notes
Lot's of other really awesome and fun things happened in the Vikings first game of the 2013 season! Hurray! Let's talk about them before I cut my wrists!
- One more thing on Ponder. You have zero excuses left, buddy. Jennings, Patterson, Peterson, Rudolph, Wright, even Simpson. How much more talent do you need around you? It doesn't take a genius to complete a dump off, or to even throw it out of bounds instead of an interception. JESUS.
- Harrison Smith is probably the only good thing we have going for us in the defense right now. Xavier Rhodes will catch up eventually, but getting Calvin Johnson for your first assignment is a real kick in the ass.
- Jeff Locke had a pretty rough outing. His punts were inconsistent, and it looked like he was fumbling with a couple of snaps on PATs. Chris Kluwe, my heart, where are you?
- Hey, congrats to Jerome Simpson and the best game he's ever had, probably. But I don't think I'm convinced that he should have been playing more to the detriment of Cordarrelle Patterson. The couple of plays he had out there he looked dynamic and awesome. What's the point of trading up for an explosive draft pick if you're not going to use them?
- Speaking of "where the hell were they", let's talk about Desmond Bishop. Was he even on the field? Should he have been? I feel like his last two preseason games were ridiculously well played, and he was ready to bring some punch to our defense. I didn't see him out there once, and I'm wondering if Erin Henderson should have been out there as long as he was.
- Oh, we also have Kyle Rudolph on the roster. THROW HIM THE GOD DAMN BALL.
- Over 27 games, Christian Ponder still hasn't reached the statistical numbers of Aaron Rodgers' 2012 season. Think about that.
Super Depressing Haiku
Hey Suh, can you share,
What you did to Sullivan?
Will share with QB.
I don't WANT to say "I told you so" to all the Ponder-pologist nerds who were yelling at me to give him a chance this season, but yes I do. Folks, it's going to be a long season. We're not going to bench Ponder until the season is essentially lost, which means we have at least half a year of us losing all our games, or playoff elimination late in the year before we finally play him to his death or bench him for MBT. Either way, the final season in the Metrodome is going to be quintessentially Vikings. Buckle up.

I was depressed and needed a non-herbal pick-me-up. So I came here.
You guys are my can't-miss site for "somebody is worse off than me."
I like how he mentions he would give Ponder a chance to prove himself this year, and after one game the decision is made! Anyone saying to start Cassel clearly did not watch preseason. Ponder completed 64% of his passes against Detroit for 13.1 yards per average.. Cassel completed 55% during preseason for 7.9 yards per average against back-ups!
Honestly, if there were a way to keep Frazier and Musgrave as DC and OC, respectively, but have an offensive-minded head coach with good play-calling skills, we'd be pretty well off. Frazier can run a defense well, and Musgrave is a good schemer, though he can't call plays to save his life. 'Course, in NFL front offices, it never happens that way. I just hope we get someone good when we clean house. Also, a better QB coach could at least salvage Ponder a la Alex Smith (if not return him to his vintage-2009 FSU passing proficiency).
Not Really He Had Some Big Throw But When You Have A Half A Second To Throw Then Your Getting Hit Gets In The QB Head Even If It Where Manning Or Rogers.
OK. Can I put 60% of it on Ponder then? Even with the other deficiencies, if we had a QB who could throw 8 yards down field to his 2nd progression, it's a different game totally.
Can't Put This Game All On Ponder Defense Sucked Offensive And Defensive Line Sucked And Play Calling Was Horrible On The Offensive Side Thanks To Musgrave.
Please don't let us have one of the greatest running backs ever and be a sub 500 team this year! Ponder come on dude!
I think Musgrave, Ponder, and sadly Frazier have to got this offseason.. If Spielman can work some draft day magic and somehow get Bridgewater, great. If not, I would like to see a strong arm like Mettenberger whose looked outstanding in his last 8 games. Somehow get CJ Mosley and start a new era with Mosley, Mauti, and Hodges at Linebacker, and fix the guard position. We could probably still compete next year. I know Ponder is bad but I blame a lot of that on Musgrave and his struggles as OC.. We cant keep running the 76 steelers playbook and expect to win games. That shits not happening.. Sigh, its going to be a LONG season
What a waste of a career for AP. Poor guy deserves a ring! On another note... I miss Kluwe so so so much. :(
I thought it was closed last year. Why is he still the starter? When he won't run 20 yards after the guy who intercepted his pass it makes me wonder if he knows his position. Rogers ran almost seventy yards and was the one to knock out the 49er that picked him off. A QB also has to be a safety. Better yet how about not sitting there with a shit eating grin every time you mess up like "oops, my bad" you're not at Winter Park tossing around balls you're on the game field the guys in stripes aren't weird coaches on the field.
Nothing left to say. The comments are all bang on and Mr. PJD your expertise in the journalistic department has left me so sexually aroused I'm wondering if I ever need to go to PuertoRicanTeens.com ever again 'cause goodness knows that one day, I'm gonna forget to erase the history. I'm out of market up here so even my buddies feel to terrible to cut me up about the loss. It's like they feel sorry for me. Like a death in the family. It's really pathetic. Watching that Niners/Packers was like a punch in the face. And not a good punch like a drunk donkeypunch but a "I'm sober taking a straight Bruce Lee shot straight to the nose" punch. Watching those quarterbacks manage their team and their coaches physically trying to will their team to victory was disheartening to watch. As for the purple pants... was able to stomach these ones. With two thick stripes going down the legs and a darker purple they don't look like leotards and a lot less gay. The white pants with white jersey was also pretty sharp as well. Oh please God help us all if they ever decide to go purple on purple.
Frazier's a pretty solid DC--but, I doubt he'd stay on in that role even if offered when the Wilfs clean house.
Really depressing watching Romo and Eli or for that matter any other NFL QB on television lace together a string of completions and hearing myself go "WOW THEY ARE AN AWESOME QB!" then realizing, NO they are an NFL QB and that's what NFL qbs do -- besides ours.
Agree about ponder. He's a squirrel in the pocket, and has a poor arm for even a college quarterback. He is simply a bad football player, and waiting for him to get better is a fool's game. It aint going to happen. Meanwhile, we are pissing away the best years of the NFL's best player. And that's a shame. Ponder is an anchor dragging in the sand.
Observations: Greenway doesn't seem to know what to do with Bush. Pondlander can't roll left (but wasn't on the field long enough to break a sweat, so at least he didn't mess his hair up) and instead of leading his receivers with the ball, would rather just follow them with it after staring them down the whole way. Sanford and son's tackling looked like hot garbage. If Detroit hadn't repeatedly tried to gift wrap the game and give it back to the Vikes the score should have been closer to 48 - 24. Next week should be a blast; like Detroit without all the stupid mistakes... score will be roughly 44 -13.
Saddest thing is we should have lost by 30 but the Lions had a billion mental mistakes that cost them.
At least we'll be able to draft Bridgewater because we aren't winning more than 3 games with Ponder "leading" us.
I think? Hahaha.
@honkeylips ^^ This.
@gsterer Even despite Eli playing like dog shit and ALSO throwing 3 interceptions, it was still pretty obvious which QB I'd rather have on our team.
@CollegeWolf Truth. The game ended up looking much more respectable than it should have.
@CollegeWolf Holy shit, could you imagine how much damage he could do with Peyton Manning? My god.
