How quickly has a new NFL coaching assistant been fired? I know the Browns fired Rob Chudzinski after one season as a Head Coach, and the Raiders pretty much fire head coaches at the end of every season as well, but I can't think of many instances when someone like an Offensive Coordinator or other assistant coach was fired in the same offseason that he was hired.
But if new Minnesota Vikings OC Norv Turner keeps talking like he did in a recent interview, he may just become the first. Typical Vikings!
The Vikings of course are heading into the offseason with a ton of questions about their roster. The biggest and ugliest (unless it isn't wearing a shirt) involved what to do at the quarterback position. Josh Freeman has self immolated, Matt Cassel got the hell out of dodge (or at least is going to beg for more money), which leaves "veteran" Christian Ponder as the big name quarterback on the Vikings roster. And to most fans, that's a problem!
But to Old Norv? He doesn't seem to think so:
“I’ve been impressed with Christian and the things he does in terms of his movement. He moves extremely well on the run. He’s made a lot of big plays. The starting point with any quarterback to me is eliminating those [bad] plays. That would be one of our starting points.”
“The guys I have been around that are so-called franchise quarterbacks, weren’t considered franchise quarterbacks until they started winning,” Turner said.
OK, OK, this wasn't exactly the ringing endorsement for Christian Ponder we all feared it may have been. And really, what Norv said - verbatim - isn't WRONG. Christian does move very well! He stands up, and sits down, and runs side to side, and all sorts of stuff very well. He's athletic, and his biggest plays certainly have come with his feet, and not his arm. And that'd be great, if he was backing up Adrian Peterson. But he's not. He's the quarterback. And in order to become a GOOD quarterback, "eliminating those bad plays" may just take a little more effort with this guy than the team can be afforded.
I mean, I still think a franchise quarterback in the draft is in order. Maybe with the first round pick, more likely with the second (depending on who drops). Ponder could stick around, and maybe he learns something that makes him great from a new coaching staff. That could happen, right? And then we'd be in the enviable position of having two potentially great quarterbacks on the roster we'd have to live with, probably trading one for more draft picks for the defense. Could be worse! But is also very unlikely!
Either way, Norv ... I got my eye on you!

^agreed. I don't think norv is 100% right, how ever in ponders tenure he has not had a oc with as much exp playing to the strengths of the offense. AP will be and should be the focus. And norv is a genie with play action. Jennings is a good route runner with good hands, Patterson has the big play speed, Rudolph is a beast. Imagine if our offense could be 65% of what SD was with Tomlinson, gates & v Jackson when they were healthy. Ball possession team, that had drives that ate the clock and picked up small chucks of yards, and hit the big play on occasion, a middle of the road "d" that was in the playoffs regularly. Call me a dreamer but I think the VIKES are poised to really become a elite team. We have the building blocks. Now it's a matter of how there used. We can't afford to miss again in the 1st rd. idk what will happen, can't wait (Bart Scott voice)
@PJDiaries the picture you used ironically was probably his best game
@PJDiaries how was you trip?
Here I thought we were done with Ponder. Guy keeps coming back like a crack whore looking for another hit. Guess we know now where they're looking in the first round.
@PJDiaries You shut your mouth.
There may be no limit to my appreciation of the fact that you have an entire category called Norv Turner's Neck Vagina. God bless America and God bless Purple Jesus Diaries.
@SkinsHogHeaven In title only, so far.
@JustinVanWyhe I still think his best game was 2012 wk 16 vs. Packers, but to each their own.
@bobzombie15 Great, except I had to come back to this shit hole.
Statistically Ponder was our best QB last year. Completion percentage, 3rd down conversions, pass plays 30+ yards, longest completion (in the air), time of possession, points scored per game, I forget the rest. Dont believe me? Look it up. The Vikings were less than 5 minutes away from a 10-5-1 record last year which would have won the division. The defensive playcalling is what cost us the season last year.
Yeah, I know Cassel had more TD passes. And more wins. The Vikings scored an average of 27.85 points per game with Ponder in there and only 20.85 per game with Cassel. This pretty much PROVES that the defense was to blame, not your standard whipping boy.
Learn something about football and you wont look so stupid.
@spinmcallister I thought Norvy's neck vag was a thing people knew about? Am I mistaken?
@PJDiaries 100 degree swing from Montego Bay to Minneapolis when we left.
Glad to see Christian follows PJD, Welcome! Tell me Christian, the teams defensive rankings that you played against, did they rank better or worse than the defenses Matt faced? What was your TD to turnover ratio? Was it better or worse than Matts? Did your total yardage per game equal Matts? Yards Averaged better or worse? Your longest pass was what, 47 yrds? Matts was 79. Who has the better rating? And you already alluded to this but it's a BIG one. Who won more F'ing games (Christ, the fact I'm even having this argument is insane!)?!!!
Good luck in your future endeavors Mr. Ponder. Stop by again sometime.
@PJD HAHAHAHAHA winner.
@acjohnson2 @PJD@ndmoverI agree I want to go defense first pick also. Carr will be it thats left at 8 for QB and I think the guy is second round talent. The key is if Spielman can do what he said he wants to do and get more picks. Trading back would be a great move. LB talent pool is pretty deep and there is some good secondary talent to be had in round 2 also. Same can be said for QB's. Fact is one big name first round talent won't right the ship. There's a lot of holes that will need to be fixed in the draft as well as free agency. We'll at least have some cash to spend on some proven veterans, Alterraun Verner anyone?
@PJD @ndmover haha I'm not tryin to make him out to be a golden boy by any stretch. I just don't know if we ABSOLUTELY have to take a QB early in the draft. I'd almost rather see us shore up the D and see what Zimmer can make happen with some upgrades. IF there is a respectable QB at he 8th spot, I wouldn't be upset. But even KC showed this year how fast you can make a team relevant by having stout D. I'd hate to see us reach AGAIN for a guy we could have got several rounds later.
@ndmover Truthfully though, you were going to go destroy your liver anyway.
Sadly, I have to agree. I've died inside a little with these posts. Not even sure how I got sucked into this dismal abyss. If Ponder is our golden boy for our first Super Bowl then I'll eat crow (I am surprised by the outpouring for Mr. Ponder). I would love an awesome, kick ass defense! As long as AP can get a ring I don't care how or who we get to get it done. Seattles defense was something special. Russel Wilson is no slouch either though.
I'm now going to go and destroy my liver for even taking part in this conversation!
@ndmover Fact of the matter is if you're scoring close to 30 points a game and still losing hat much, you have to put more of the blame on the defense for not helping you win than to offense for not scoring more points. Whether it as Matt or Christian back there if you're in prevent D and losing games on the last drive every week the offense can't do anything about that. Trent Dilfer proved years ago that with a mediocre QB and a good D you can win Super Bowls. Even with as good as Peyton is, look at how many rings he has. You need Defense to win big games.
I admitted the defense sucked ass in my previous response (see "dumpster fire"(that means not good)). When your defense is ranked 31 out of 32 it's pretty shitty. Not sure what more you want me to say on that? I think it's awesomely hilarious that you use phrases like "Ponder outgunned Cassel". Ponder is synonymous with outgunned just not him doing it. Let's go over the stats ONE more time. I had to look up their stats since both were in my rear view mirror.
Total yards: Cassel
Yards per game: Cassel
Yards average: Cassel
Games with multiple passing TD's: Cassel
Games with 300+ yards: Cassel
Games Won: Cassel
Here are some stats Christian did beat Matt on.
Pick 6's: Ponder
Games lost: Ponder
You're right Christian kicked his ass up and down!
You never did answer me to which qb played against the tougher defenses?
You like Christian, good got it. In all sincerity I wanted the guy to have a breakout year. Didn't happen and I don't think it ever will. He's not the answer at qb and neither is Cassel. If I had to choose (God help us all) I'd go with Cassel out of the 3 we had and so would Greg Jennings.
Running your mouth wont change the fact that Ponder out gunned Cassel in almost every category last year. And no amount of crying on your part will change the fact that the Vikings season didnt go down the toilet because of the play of either QB, good or bad. It was lost purely because of the defense. And the sad thing is, you know it. You just wont admit it.
The Vikes were less than 5 minutes from a 10-5-1 record and a division crown, if not for the DC calling on the Tampa Two to lose the games for us.
Don't get me wrong. Our defense sucked from the top down. From Leslie to the coordinator to Chris (Stevie Wonder) Cook. Audie Cole was let go from the team and then brought back to embarrass the coaches and the rest of the linebackers play. How do you overlook that ability for years? Our defense was an absolute dumpster fire all season long. And I would totally agree with them taking a defensive player with their first round pick. I get it! Especially since we shot ourselves in the foot for draft placement. But don't sit and defend your poor qb play. WOW, a whole 42 yards!! If that's your rallying cry for your performance then I feel bad for ya son. Of course you could of had a 60+ yarder to Rudolph who was wide open up the middle (I think I seen him stop and buy a Dome dog and put all the fixings on it while waving wildly to get your attention) but instead decided to stare down Simpson in triple coverage for a pick 6. Speaking of pick 6's, who had more? You or Matty?
I don't see us getting any sleepers (Russell Wilson anyone?) this draft so may as well keep playing you and hope for a top 2 or 3 pick next year.
Say hi to Samantha for me will you.
Cassels "79 yarder" went less than 15 in the air. Ponder had the longest completed pass at 42 yards.
And As I already said, Ponder had 7 more points per game than Cassel. If you knew ANYTHING about this team, you would remember that on Nov 6th Robi and K Will came out to the media and basically said the defensive playcalling SUCKS. And after THAT they started winning. They didnt win because Cassel was the QB. They started winning because the defensive playcalling was better.
Good God, wake up.
